Exposing the ‘Excuses’

By Cecilia Bence

For years scientist having been sharing the hard facts about our current climate crisis, which led towards its universal acknowledgement. Whilst the issue remains within global headlines, action against climate change has not produced cultivating results. But why? With the increasing expanse of scientific evidence and research, why does a large portion of Australia’s demographic choose to ignore the emergency at hand? Psychologist, fellow activists and social workers have examined the real reasons behind the lack of concern from citizens, identifying which have been the most influential and how they have affected the climate conscious mindset. It’s time to expose the ‘excuses’.

“It’s cold, so global warming doesn’t exist.”

A common misconception regarding global warming is that it means the entire world has become hotter… in all locations and during all seasons. Instead, global warming states that the average annual air temperature is rising across the globe. Whilst this means, we should still except our cold winters, we should also except irregular weather patterns (Yale Climate Connections, 2020).

“Renewable Energy is unreliable as they are only effective when its windy and sunny.”

Evidently solar and wind energy have been two of the most prominent forms of renewable energy promoted within the commercial world. Therefore, many are not aware of the expansive range of renewable energy sources that have been discovered (such as hydro, tidal, geothermal and biomass). The main issue we now face is finding a median that allows the cost of generating and utilising renewable energy affordable for the economy (ARENA, 2020).

“Animals will adapt to climate change.”

Animals do survive in differing environments from the phenomenon of adaption. However, their ability to adapt is dependent on the rate of change of their environment. With the rising rate of the global temperature is accumulating, many species chance of adapting is becoming minute (National Geographics, 2020).

“It’s too late to fix the damage down.”

Yes, humankind have already provoked dangerous climate changes and set the course for future changes. Nonetheless that does not mean motivation in stopping these changes should be lost. Although we cannot except immediate responses from climate conscious actions, we can except future triumphs. Consider the emissions of greenhouse gases. If we stopped all greenhouse gas emissions today, the steady increase of our global temperature would slow. Over a time lag of less than a decade, we would begin to experience a transformation in the temperature patterns for the good (NASA, 2021).

Rapid expanse of media, political debate and casual idleness have fostered many climate conscious reservations. Whilst it is easy to accept doubts, many plead that you do not. Look at the research, find the facts because it is time to face the truth. It is time to stop all the “blah, blah, blah” (Greta Thunberg, 2021) and start acting! The question is… how will you act?
